A common complaint about hardwood floors in arid zones is checking and splitting due to low humidity. Many people believe running a humidifier in arid zones in summer is futile. This is largely due to the fact that an AC unit is a de-humidifier. These will counter act each other but not totally as your AC does not run continually and this counter reaction by the AC unit can be neutralized to a point. However some checking should be expected in your wood flooring as nothing can be 100% effective.…

Just got off the phone with this lady who wanted Green flooring. Told her about cork, corkoleum, Marmoleum which I think are best even energy consumption wise. The Bamboo (wish we could grow it here) but of course she don't want to pay that much so then she starts talking about ceramic tile. Then proceeds to harp on me about all the fuel of shipping all that flooring overseas and yata yata yata.
I said, well ever see how much fuel it takes to fire ceramics and porcelain tile? Yea, might as well…

Like the title says, is it Ok to install moisture sensitive floor covering over fresh SLC? How about a laminate with a moisture retarder UL over it?
Well first lets ask this question...is all SLC the same? I'd have to say it is not.. First of all I am not sure they all have the same technology that bonds the water into the mix.
Of course following the instructions...if they say wait 24 hours with in an ambient zone Rh and temp are correct then I would say yes absolutely do it.
Especially so w…

Internet videos are on the rise. Folks would rather watch than read. Call it web 2.0 that many of you may be hearing about. I've been playing around with creating one that deals with
replacing a hardwood floor board. Quality photos is they key if you want to add some still shots, which I did in the YouTube video below. Still shots yes, quality...hardly. Pics were taken at the NWFA convention eariler this year. Lighting was poor and of course I had the wrong setting on the camera.
When th…

I thought about this topic because it may be a great angle in getting more hardwood jobs for installers. We all hear the talk about this engineered floor can be refinished one, two, and three times blah, blah, blah. That’s what the manufacturers, dealers, and salespeople say, but does anyone go as far as educating the buyer
if it can be refinished that many times? Much has to do with sub floor flatness.
Next time you hear a customer balk at floor prep charges or simply want to go with th…

Times change quickly. Not long ago installers could pick their own jobs, but what’s happening today with the lousy economy? Are installers willing to take on those dreaded jobs? You bet. Money is tight. With business in the doldrums (some say they’ve never seen it worse) I talked to a fellow that works for a national flooring removal company.
“Dealers don’t call us anymore,” says Bob Knupp who works as a regional representative for a national flooring removal company. Trying to get new account…
